The equipment is intended for indivisible archives and documents such as bound volumes, albums and newspapers when the responsible conservation team has approved immersion as the treatment route.

II. Deacidification Working Principle

The specified process combines pressure, electro-osmosis, low-power ultrasound and a calcium-based aqueous deacidification agent to support penetration into paper during immersion. Treatment settings and acceptance criteria must be established for the material group; penetration and final condition can vary with paper, construction, load and process selection.

III. Workflow

  1. Documents enter the immersion tank;
  2. Close the drying-chamber door;
  3. Prepare the deacidification solution;
  4. The deacidification solution enters the immersion tank;
  5. Depressurize and vent; perform negative-pressure immersion;
  6. Recover the deacidification solution;
  7. Vacuum-evaporate the deacidification solution;
  8. Condense and recover the deacidification solution;
  9. Repeat evaporation to complete drying;
  10. Raise the pressure, open the chamber and remove the documents.

Selection Questions

When is immersion preferable to spray treatment? This system is intended for compatible bound or rolled materials selected for whole-volume immersion and the integrated vacuum-assisted process. Spray equipment may be more appropriate for individually handled sheets or materials excluded from immersion after assessment.

What must be tested before a batch? Review paper and binding condition, media and adhesive stability, previous repairs, dimensional response and compatibility with the selected aqueous agent. Representative testing and defined acceptance checks are necessary before treating collection material.
